In technical terms Alcon’s new F550 kit features a custom designed 6x47.6 mm piston zinc-finished iron caliper and larger discs on front (393x36 mm) and rear (400x36 mm) axles. Performance benefits include: up to 10% reduction in disc temperature rise; up to 20% reduction in front and rear brake pad work rates; up to 4% increase in available brake torque, and up to 4% reduction in pedal effort.
The F550 kit is compatible with the stock OEM actuation so is designed to be simple to fit, but they have also been fully militarized with the inclusion of high-temperature seal material, wiper seals on every piston for dirt exclusion, pad push-back springs for optimum off-road wear resistance, acid zinc finish for maximum corrosion protection, and inboard bleed screws to increase tamper-proofing. The F550 kit is designed to enable the vehicle to be operated at up to 11,000 kg GVW. (24000 lbs)
Notable defense-focused work for Alcon includes a brake package for the Land Rover Defender WMIK (Weapons Mount Installation Kit), which underwent an upgrade that would see GVW increase from around 3.5-4.7 tonnes. The WMIK upgrade, which leveraged Alcon’s extensive off-road rallycross expertise, was followed by a BAE Systems contract to upgrade the brakes on British Army Combat Vehicle Reconnaissance (Tracked) (CRV-Ts) for Afghanistan, and a contract from Supacat to upgrade the brakes on its Jackal vehicles, which were increasing in weight due to the addition of armour.
Alcons package offers a 10mm increase in rotor diameter while still maintaining the ability to fit under OEM wheels. The system offers an increased thermal mass of almost 25% and a 20% reduction (and hence 20% improvement in performance ) over the stock system on the pad work rate.
To put this in real numbers –
For every 10MPH in vehicle speed – the truck will stop 1.2seconds faster. This is about 1 full truck length. So a 50MPH stop will be 5 truck lengths shorter. On the second hard stop the OEM brakes will be heat saturated. Their stopping distance will go up measurable while Alcon remains the same. One the second or third hard stop at a 50MPH cruising speed the Alcon brakes will stop fully 5-8 seconds and 100+ feet sooner than the OEM system.

Alcon Components Ltd, the Midlands, UK based acclaimed motorsport brake and clutch company, have launched brake upgrade kits for defence and security armoured variants of Ford’s F550 and Chevrolet’s Suburban HD. Offered to the global defence and security market, these kits allow OEM’s and vehicle modification companies to overcome the challenges faced when adding significant extra weight to the platform when up-armouring for military, security, VIP and head of state applications.

If a kit is not available “off the shelf” then Alcon are able to offer a bespoke brake kit design service that can deliver a similar offering for any platform of the customer’s choice.
