Alcon AV1 vs. AV5 Brake Pads: Compound Differences Explained

Alcon’s AV1 and AV5 brake pad compounds are both designed for use with Alcon big brake kits, but they are tuned for different priorities. The key difference is the balance between braking torque, metallic content, noise, dust, and wear life.

The AV5 compound is Alcon’s newer lower-wear alternative. It is designed to reduce noise and brake dust while also extending pad life. Compared with AV1, AV5 is estimated to deliver approximately 25% longer mileage,  That makes AV5 a more refined option for  trucks and SUVs where owners still want the confidence of an Alcon brake system, but with cleaner wheels, quieter operation, and longer service intervals.

The AV1 compound is the original Alcon high-performance pad compound. It has a significantly higher metallic content, which gives it a stronger friction profile and more aggressive brake response. Higher-metallic brake pad compounds are commonly used where heat resistance, braking torque, and heavy-duty performance are priorities. The tradeoff is that metallic compounds generally create more visible brake dust and are more likely to produce noise, especially in lower-speed street use or when cold.  

This does not make one compound universally better than the other. AV1 gives the brake system a more aggressive feel and higher torque output but was primarily introduced for heavy weight armored vehicles. AV5 is an evolution now offered much more frquently based on consumer feedback and braking usage.  It gives up some peak torque in exchange for reduced dust, reduced noise, and improved wear life. For most street-driven Alcon-equipped vehicles, AV5 are the better everyday compound. For customers who value the strongest brake response for competition the AV1 may be the right choice.
