This post was prompted by a test reported by Autoblog (August 10, 2026), which covered drag-race footage from The Fast Lane Truck on YouTube comparing the 2027 Ram 1500 SRT TRX against the outgoing model.
More Power, More Mass — Not a Free Lunch
The 2027 Ram 1500 SRT TRX bumps output to 777 hp from the supercharged 6.2L HEMI V8 — 75 hp more than the truck it replaces. On paper that sounds decisive. In practice, real-world drag races between the new and old TRX show the new truck wins a standing-start run by the narrowest of margins, and the older truck actually pulls ahead in a rolling race. The culprit is added curb weight, which dilutes the power-to-weight ratio enough to largely erase the horsepower advantage in a straight line.
That's a useful data point for anyone making purchasing or build decisions. It's also a direct reminder of something brake engineers have known forever: more mass means more kinetic energy, and kinetic energy has to go somewhere when you stop.
What Extra Weight Means at the Threshold
Every pound the 2027 TRX adds over the previous generation shows up at the brake rotor. Stopping distance scales with mass — double the mass, double the energy the brakes must dissipate as heat. On the street that margin is absorbed by fade and pad wear. On a performance run, in a canyon, or in an emergency, it shows up as longer stopping distances and higher rotor temperatures.
The 2021+ TRX platform was already one of the heaviest performance trucks ever built. The 2027 model pushes that further. If your truck is seeing spirited canyon roads, high-speed desert running, or any kind of performance driving scenario, the factory brake system is not sized for the work the new power and mass numbers create.
The Fix: A Properly Sized Big Brake Kit
Alcon's big brake kit for the 2021+ Ram TRX addresses exactly this scenario. Alcon is a race-proven brake manufacturer — their calipers and rotors are used in endurance racing, rally, and military applications — and this kit is purpose-built for the TRX's weight class and power band. Larger swept rotor area, greater thermal mass, and Alcon's multi-piston caliper design give the platform the stopping hardware it should have shipped with for performance use.

If the new 777-hp TRX taught us anything, it's that raw output numbers don't tell the whole story. The same logic applies to braking: factory spec was engineered to a cost and a regulatory standard, not to the demands you put on the truck when you're actually driving it hard.
