BMW M3 GTR E46 Returns to Goodwood for the 40th Anniversary of the M3

At the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed (July 9-12), BMW Group Classic sent the full-competition M3 GTR E46 up the 1.16-mile hill climb driven by former racing driver Dirk Adorf. It was the centrepiece of BMW's celebration marking 40 years of the M3, and it was a reminder that the E46 in GT-specification is as serious a piece of braking machinery as anything that ran in that era of motorsport.

The GTR variant was built to race in American GT-class competition, where high-downforce aero loads and repeated hard braking zones at circuits like Lime Rock and Laguna Seca demanded hardware far beyond anything fitted to the road car. Enormous front rotors, stiff caliper mounts, and thermal management built into every pad compound choice -- these weren't options on a GT-spec E46. They were requirements.

Watching one climb Goodwood flat-out is a visceral thing. That sound, those brakes working against real deceleration loads on the top section of the hill, is the whole argument for why the E46 M3 platform still draws serious builders more than two decades on.
