Racing duo Henry Wright and Kevin Glover (Clubracer) spent the third round of the 750MC Roadsports Championship at Silverstone GP doing what a Mk5 Golf GTI isn't supposed to do — collecting multiple podiums and leaving as class leaders. The car runs EBC's Apollo Big Brake Kit, and based on the results, it's doing its job under sustained GP-circuit braking loads.
The 750MC Roadsports Championship is a production-based series, which means the cars are relatively close to road-going spec. That context matters: repeated heavy stops at a circuit like Silverstone will expose pad fade, rotor warping, and inconsistent bite pressure far faster than a street car ever would. Finishing multiple podiums across a full round — and holding a class lead into the fourth round — means the brake package held thermal stability and consistent modulation across sessions.
EBC on the Mk5 GTI Platform: What's Available for Your Car
The Apollo BBK is EBC's race-oriented big brake conversion — not a catalog item for most road or occasional track users. What you can fit to a Mk5 GTI (2006–2009) are EBC's Yellowstuff pads, which are the correct compound choice if you're doing track days or autocross on a street-registered car. That's meaningful for dedicated track builds where consistent lap-to-lap brake feel under high thermal load is the priority. For street-driven cars that see occasional track use, upgrading to a high-performance compound on OEM-size hardware is usually the correct first move: it's cheaper, doesn't affect wheel clearance, and doesn't require recalibrating your brake bias. Only once the pad compound is the limiting factor does a BBK make economic sense.
Wright and Glover's results at Silverstone show that EBC's brake hardware can hold up under extended circuit use at a category level where mechanical reliability directly decides championship standings.
