Worried about additional weight?

We frequently get questions about the weight of our off-road brake systems compared to stock and aluminum systems. The fact is that this aspect of the brake system is important, but not really a significant factor.

Looking at it two ways:

Power loss due to extra rotating weight is very small compared to the additional rotating mass if you have moved to 37" tires or heavy duty wheels. . The rotors are very near the rotation center of the wheel and will have a negligible impact, especially compared to the tires. A general rule of thumb we use in the racing world is that you lose about 1 HP per 7lbs. That means in order to lose 100HP you would have had to add 700 pounds of weight. Our total shipping weight is 140# including boxes, pads, material, etc.. If that’s even double the factory weight – it means you would have added 70#, losing about 10HP. That’s 2% of a modded Bronco power. The extra benefit of braking better and sooner adds 20% plus to your overall performance so your 0-60-0MPH times is dramatically better.

Where it DOES have a measurable impact is in the amount of energy the shock absorbers have to work with as they go over bumps. However what we found time and time again, and confirmed race engineers from a several pro racing teams (LeMans, Daytona, Grand-Am, etc) is that it is always better to have power, braking, and reliability even at the expense of some extra unsprung/rotating weight, because a good suspension can be tuned to work with that extra weight.

In the "old-days" when brakes and shock dampers were more rudimentary the additional weight was a very significant concern in these areas. …but in todays era of tunable suspension, shock dynos, shaker rigs, etc.. the weight of the discs is not really a factor that needs to be fretted over, it is simply accommodated.

Big Brake Kit common questions

Installation

What tools do I need to install?

Our brake kits require common hand tools for installation. You will need a torque wrench, brake fluid (2 pints), and loctite.

What if I run into issues while installing?

We pride ourself in expert advice. You can call or text us at 630-360-2548 for expert technical and installation advice.

Are any other modifications required?

For OEM installations where wider rotors are fitted, you should expect to remove or trim the rotor dust/heat shield. This often interferes with larger rotors but is no longer needed due to our upgraded components.

Will I need a new Master Cylinder

No. All of our brake kits are designed specifically to work with the hydraulic ratio of your stock master cylinder

Do I need wheel spacers

We provide a fitment template for you to check clearance in advance. In some cases a small spacer may be required and we provide those when we are sure they are needed.

Are brake pads included?

Yes. We include the appropriate brake pads for all our brake kits. In some cases we offer multiple compounds for you to customize your experience. We stock a wide variety of pads for Alcon Brake kits here.

Break In questions

Do I need to brake in new rotors/pads?

Yes! We highly recommend following our brake pad/rotor bed in process. This ensures that an even layer of pad material is deposited on the rotor to eliminate shudder, increase rotor life, and to heat temper the new rotors for longer life.

What about noise and dust?

Noise and dust are related to the brake pad compound. Higher temp pads have more metallic composition and will therefore increase potential noise and dust the more aggressive the pad. For squealing issues we recommended loosening the caliper and re tightening it. This will sometimes change the caliper "frequency". Additionally "sticky shims" or our titanium pad shims will reduce noise.

Operational Questions

Is this compatible with my ABS?

Yes! We test our brakes to ensure they are fully compatible with your stock ABS on all models we release.

How long do they last?

Lifetime of components is massively variable based on how they are used. High dust/dirt/salt environments will wear seals out more quickly. Heavy Duty or Track use will also affect rotor and pad life.

What is the warranty?

We support the manufacturers 12 month/12000 mile warranty against factory defects and material issues. You can find more details here.
