Track Ready Rotors vs Big Brake Kit for Honda Civic Type R

Track Ready Rotors vs Big Brake Kit for Honda Civic Type R

If heat is killing your pedal feel after two or three hard laps, the Track Ready Rotor System fixes that with Paragon two-piece rotors front and rear, keeping your OEM Brembo caliper and saving real money. If you want a genuine step up in clamping force (more piston area, a purpose-built caliper, track-spec pads included), the Big Brake System swaps in a Paragon PA035 6-piston monobloc up front and pairs it with a larger rotor. The rotor system is the smart first move for most HPDE drivers; the Big Brake System is for the owner who has already outgrown that step, or simply wants the best hardware available for the FK8 or FL5.

Track Ready Rotor System: Who It's For and What to Know

This kit is built for the Type R owner who is already feeling the OEM cast-iron rotors saturate during an HPDE session: pedal goes soft, smell follows, confidence goes with it. Swapping to Paragon's two-piece construction addresses that directly. The ring material is CM-250 high-carbon alloy cast iron, which holds heat more evenly than standard iron. The 6061-T6 aluminum hat is there to reduce mass, not decoration: each front assembly comes in at 20.5 lbs, cutting about 4 lbs per corner from the OEM baseline on 2017–2019 FK8 models. Less rotating and unsprung mass means the suspension reacts faster and the brake torque is more immediate.

The front rotor matches OEM diameter exactly at 350 mm x 32 mm. That is a deliberate choice; it is a direct bolt-on to the factory Brembo 4-piston caliper with no modifications required, and it keeps ABS calibration and brake bias exactly where Honda set them. The rear offers two paths: the 305 mm x 11 mm OEM-size option (fixed-hat 2-piece, 8.8 lbs per assembly, 3 lbs lighter than OEM) or an upsize to 340 mm or 350 mm x 11 mm, which needs the extended heavy-duty steel caliper carriers included in that version of the kit. The upsize rear is worth considering if you want balanced thermal capacity front to rear; verify wheel clearance with the fitment template first, as not every 18-inch wheel accommodates it.

Honest trade-off: The OEM Brembo caliper stays. It is a good caliper with 40 mm pistons, and it is not the weak point at the HPDE novice or intermediate level. But it uses aluminum pistons, and aluminum transfers more heat to the fluid than stainless steel does. If you are running multi-day track events or advanced sessions with longer hot laps, you may find yourself back here looking at the next step. No pad compound is listed as included in the kit per published specs; verify the package configuration with Alconkits before ordering.

Big Brake System: Who It's For and What to Know

The Big Brake System is the complete front-axle answer for the Type R owner who wants the caliper replaced, not just the rotor. The Paragon PA035 is a 6-piston monobloc unit with staggered bore sizes (27 mm, 31.8 mm, and 38.1 mm across three piston pairs), meaning clamping force is distributed across the pad face rather than concentrated at two contact points. At 6.5 lbs per caliper (without pads), the PA035 is competitive on weight against the OEM Brembo. The bigger structural difference is the piston material: titanium nitride coated stainless steel rather than aluminum, which acts as a thermal barrier and reduces the rate at which heat travels from pad to fluid; that is the mechanism behind brake fade in hard use.

The front rotor grows beyond OEM diameter. The PA035 caliper pairs with a 370 mm x 36 mm rotor, which is 20 mm larger in diameter and 4 mm thicker than OEM, providing more thermal mass to absorb and dissipate heat. The 72-directional-vane rotor design is specified for this kit. Both the 355 mm and 370 mm options use the same Paragon fully-floating 2-piece construction as the Track Ready System, with CM-250 iron rings and 6061-T6 aluminum hats. The 355 mm kit (paired with the PA015 caliper, otherwise the same piston layout) saves 8.8 lbs of unsprung weight over OEM on 2017–2019 FK8 models; the comparable figure for the 370 mm configuration is not published. Included with the kit: Paragon P3 Street/Track semi-metallic pads (manufactured by Winmax Japan), a pair of Goodridge stainless steel braided brake lines, and CNC-machined caliper mounting brackets. Track-spec R5 or R7 compounds are available at additional cost if your sessions demand more than P3 covers.

Honest trade-off: This is a front-only upgrade. The rear OEM caliper and rotor remain, which the product listing notes as compatible and describes as resulting in minimal change in brake bias. If you eventually want a full-corner upgrade, the rear will need to be addressed separately. Wheel fitment must be confirmed with the Paragon fitment template before ordering; the listing is explicit that the kit cannot be returned for wheel clearance issues. One installation note from the field: casting parting lines on the steering knuckle may need minor grinding before the bracket sits flush, though no permanent modification to the knuckle is required.

How to Choose

Start with what the car actually does to you on track. If the problem is rotor fade (warping, glazing, heat soak through OEM cast iron), the Track Ready Rotor System resolves that without touching the caliper. It covers both axles, costs significantly less, and installs as a direct replacement. If you are at the point where the OEM Brembo caliper itself is the bottleneck (fluid boiling under sustained heavy braking, or you simply want 6-piston hardware and a caliper built for track temperature cycles), the Big Brake System is the right kit.

Budget is a real separator here. The Track Ready System is the lower-cost entry point by a meaningful margin; the Big Brake System carries a substantially higher price that reflects the caliper, braided lines, and pad compound included in the package. Neither price is listed here because both change, but both are published on the respective product pages.

Wheel size matters for both. The OEM-size Track Ready front rotor should clear most Type R factory wheels, but the upsize rear options and every Big Brake configuration need clearance verification. Both kits are workable if your FK8 or FL5 is on 18-inch or larger wheels, with minimum sizing confirmed for the Big Brake front options.

For the buyer who wants the look as much as the performance: the PA035 caliper in its hard anodized or ENP nickel plated finish is visible hardware behind an open-spoke wheel, and the larger rotor diameter adds to that presence. The Track Ready Rotor System's anodized aluminum hat is also visible, but the OEM caliper stays in frame. Both are legitimate upgrades; the question is how far you want to go.
